I'm just thinking about back when we had the daily SP cap. I played so often then, and didn't want to miss a single day of SP because it was right after the SP restart.
I was dedicated! I'm in the military and often travel from WA state to where the weather is good for flying, especially in the winter and early spring. I have a very small Eddie Bauer bag that fits perfectly in a side panel of the plane, that is used for storage. All my PS3 stuff fits in there just right along with some Tshirts, socks, boxers and a pair of flip flops.
So if I spent two weeks in Fallon, NV or maybe Jacksonville, I would still play and not miss my cap. I even brought it to Key West, but the lag was bad and the bars are good.
Don't get me wrong - Daily Cap sucked!
I remember when I killed Mr Zitro the first time, before he was tanks, and actually miss his trash talk on the forums somehow. When I played heavy I loved going against Exmaple or Cubs or Lance.
When we still played CBs, we had some great games against Southern Legion, Imperfects, and Synergy. There was so much adrenaline that my hands would be shaking as the games were so close.
Saturdays I would play all day. Wife would go to work, I'd get coffee, log on, and hit the weekly cap in one day, or at least get close to it. Then I'd be scrambling to do sh*t around the house and make dinner so she wouldn't know I was playing a video game all day. She HATES this game lol.
I guess it was the novelty...or the idea - the potential. I don't play a lot of video games. The last time I was into a shooter was the first Far Cry. When Everquest 2 came out, I actually got into that pretty good too. Aside from that, the only games I've played are Elder scrolls and the Fallout series.
I probably would be logged on right now, but I'm moving to San Diego in a few months and need to get this house ready to be rented. Tearing up rugs, pulling down drywall, etc...all my TVs are unhooked. But if this was 4 or 5 months ago I'd probably make time. I don't remember the last time I hit my cap. Weeks. I hope that they do something good with the next few updates. We really need some kind of hook. I'm sure for every burnout like me now, there's another me 9 months ago just getting into the game.
Maybe I will try to log in today after I get some stuff done around here. I ran a Gallente assault before it was cool, or about to be cool, from what I've read. I have about 2.5 mil unallocated SP I'm guessing and don't really care.
This ain't a "doom and gloom" post either, I'm sure theres a steady flow of players coming to check out what it's all about. But surely something needs to be done to (attempt) to retain older players.
I think a "mentoring" option would be cool. It would allow a veteran (say, 10+ mil SP) to join a battle academy fight, limited to MLT or standard gear, and help new players not shoot at the MCC. Mics would be required to play with a mentor, who would be the default squad leader, and everyone in the team would be in the squad, also by default. Mentor teams would only play against other mentor teams, and there would still be an option for non mentor games, where players can shoot the MCC to their hearts desire. Throw a little bit of bonus SP at the mentors for their time and voil+á, theres a good reason to logon and play. New players will suck less, old ones get a bonus and a little corp advertising.
As much as I enjoyed this game in the past, for me now, it's a lot of nostalgia. A lot of the best veterans have already left.
Heres another good one CCP...when I played EQ, sometimes I'd get sick of it and let my scrip lapse. Then SoE would send me an email to logon for bonus SP. You should send your players that haven't logged in for months an email like that. Give their account a loyalty bonus. A free 3 day active booster or something for guys that haven't been on in months. Something!
Like I said, theres always going to be people playing this game, it is free. And it's fun, I've enjoyed it. But right now it's too easy to get too much of a good thing.
I understand that you are working to bring updates faster, this is great! But some other things to need to be done with urgency, like a player market. PvE. MOAR maps! If you don't care about losing veteran players, by all means, continue at your leisure. If you do, then light a fire under your collective @sses and make Dust what it can be!
Here's to the old days!
